Networking 101

What is the key to landing your next job opportunity? You are armed with a great resume and solid background, how hard could it be? Well that truly depends on your timeline, how comfortable you are with networking, and how much networking you are doing on a daily and weekly basis.

Essentially a similar strategy goes into "opportunity uncovering" networking as a sales strategy process. You are the seller of the product being "You". You need to then come up with the marketing and sales strategy. Your networking plan is part of the sales strategy. Who will you target, how will you target them, where will you target. The "who" may represent a vertical or industry you want to get into, a role family, companies you would like to work for, and likely some combination of these.

Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Be Proactive

  • Plan ahead - write down your activities

  • Networking is about building relationships, it's not about just asking for a job

  • Know that it will take time and some patience on your part

  • Networking is give and take

  • Networking will likely move you out of your comfort zone..and that's ok

  • Always thank your contacts for referrals, introductions, advice, etc.

Most people in the job market today are landing their next opportunity through networking and this time of the year is a great time to start!
